How to install running boards on Chevy Silverado – Simple installation steps

Most Chevy Silverado users will agree – a running board could make using the vehicle a little more comfortable.

If you don’t use your truck very often, you don’t have to worry about this at all. But, if you are a regular user, the absence of a running board can cause quite a lot of discomfort. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to improve the aesthetics of your car, does it?

Why should you go for it? – Benefits of installing running boards

The most obvious benefit is comfort for you but there are quite a few other benefits such as the following:

  • It acts like a step for all passengers and especially helps shorter family members get in and out with ease.
  • It can protect the wheels from rock chips during travel.
  • It is a safety feature, to be honest, because chances of falling while jumping out or getting in are smaller.
  • Thanks to the many colors and materials of running boards available, the running board will make your car look more attractive.
  • It can double as a doormat and keep the inside of the car clean.

Types of running boards that you can choose from

Of course, there are many options but there are 4 main types of running boards that you can pick from. They are:

  • Wheel-wheel design – this design gives convenient access to the roof and bed of the Silverado. Also, as the name states, these running boards are long and run from the front wheel to the back, providing more safety to kids.
  • Oval – this design is perfect for those living in snowy regions. It gives more area and stability while getting in and out of the car.
  • Cab-length – these are the most popular running boards as they are comfortable and form a non-slip surface. They cover the back of the front wheel to the door.
  • Sports design – this design is for those looking for something fancy and sleek. They are very stylish and easy to use.

The right one for you will depend on your need and the look you want to achieve. Make sure you check multiple images of each type and compare them. This will give you a fair idea.

Now, let’s learn how to install the running board you chose. (No, you don’t need a mechanic.) Just follow the steps below:

  1. Along with the running board, you will need multiple tools and hardware. Most running boards come with the required tools but make sure you check and assemble the remaining tools before you start the installation process.
  2. Below your vehicle, you will see pre-drilled holes (this is one of the things we love about the Silverado). Locate these holes so that you use them for your running board. Chances of there not being pre-drilled holes are very slim. So we are not going to bother about that scenario at the moment.
  3. Check the holes to see if there’s a plug inside them. If yes, remove the plug.
  4. Now install the bracket by placing the clip nut in the large hole and threaded nuts in the small holes.
  5. Tighten all the nuts until they are secure. Recheck the tightness once you are done so that you don’t leave them loose at all. They need to be strongly in place.
  6. Position the running board on the brackets. Before you bolt it in, try multiple positions to zero in on the most comfortable one.
  7. Only after you are sure of the position, bolt the board in place.
  8. Keep the bolts loose first and recheck everything.
  9. If everything looks okay, go ahead and tighten them.
  10. Repeat the exact same process on the other side of your vehicle.

Note: On the passenger’s side, be sure that the board doesn’t interfere with the fuel tank or anything else. If it does, try repositioning the tank (lower it).

Check both running boards and the bolts to ensure they are in place and tight. Use the running boards too by stepping in and out a few times on either side.

After you are satisfied, pat yourself on the back for a job well done!

While installing running boards is not complicated, you might find it daunting if you aren’t into DIY projects. If that’s the case, we advise you to seek help from a friend or hire a professional to do this for you. Sometimes, spending a few bucks is more convenient than the hassle. All the best!
